Abstract

BackgroundandObjectives:Oneofthemostprevalentdrug-resistantbacteriaismethicillin-resistantStaphylococcusepi-dermidis(MRSE)causinghealthcareinfections.Previously,ameta-analysisstudyonthefrequencyofMRSEwasconducted fromMar2006toJan2016inIran.Thepresentstudyaimedtoevaluatethechangesinthisprevalenceinthelast 5yearsin differentcities in Iran.MaterialsandMethods:PublishedarticlesonthefrequencyofMRSEwerecollectedfromthe WebofScience,PubMed, Scopus,GoogleScholar,CochraneLibrary,andIraniandatabasesfromthebeginningof2016totheendof2020.Ofthe503recordsidentified, 17studiesmettheinclusioncriteria,andtheirextracteddatawereanalyzedusingcomprehensive meta-analysis version 2.0 (Biostat).Results:TheanalysisshowedthatthefrequencyofMRSEhasdecreasedsignificantlyinthelastfiveyearsandreached60.8 [95% confidenceinterval (95% CI) 54.2-66.9] among culture-positive cases of S. epidermidis in Iran.Conclusion:ThenoticeablereductionintheprevalenceofMRSEinIrancouldbeduetotheimprovementofinfectioncon-trolprogramsandinterruptionofthepathogentransmissioncycle.Anotherinfluentialreasonisthesignificantreductionin methicillin prescriptions by physicians for infections caused by staphylococci.
