Abstract

Most zoonoses are occupational diseases. Q fever, brucellosis and tularemia are major zoonotic diseases for butchersandslaughterhouseworkers. However, littleinformationisavailableabouttheseinfectiousdiseasesin suchprofessionalpopulationsinwesternofIran.Theaimofthisstudywastoinvestigatetheseroprevalenceand risk factors associated with these three zoonoses among butchers andslaughterhouse workers in the Lorestan provinceofIran.In2017,289individuals(144butchersorslaughterhouseworkers,and145peoplefromthe generalpopulation)wereenrolledin11differentcountiesofthisprovince.Collectedserumsamplesweretested byELISAfordetectionofIgGantibodiesagainstCoxiellaburnetii,Brucellaspp.orFrancisellatularensisantigens. TheseroprevalenceofQfever,brucellosisandtularemiaamongallparticipantswere23.5%,31.8%and3.8%, respectively.TheseroprevalenceofbrucellosisandQfeveramongbutchersandslaughterhouseworkers(43.7% and29.8%,respectively)weresignificantlyhigher(p < 0.05)thanthoseofthegeneralpopulation(20%and 17.2%,respectively).Acontacthistorywithsmallruminants(sheepandgoats)wasassociatedwithahigherrisk ofpositiveserologyforallthreestudiedzoonoses.ThehighseroprevalenceforQfeverandbrucellosiswefound amongbutchersandslaughterhouseworkerssuggeststhatbothdiseasesarecommoninthesepopulationsofthe Lorestan province. Since these two infectious diseases are clinically unspecific, they must be systematically includedintheetiologicaldiagnosisofinfectiousdiseasesoccurringintheseat-riskpopulations.Inaddition,we recommendspecifictrainingprogramsaswellastheuseofpersonalprotectiveequipmentintheseoccupational groupstoreducetheoccurrenceofthesezoonoticdiseases.
