Abstract

Background:Toachieveevidence-basedpolicymakingtoimproveaccesstodentalservicesandreduceinequalityintheutilization of theseservices,theidentificationof effectivefactorsontheuseof dentalservicesisessential. Objectives: Therefore,thepresentstudywasconductedtoinvestigatethemostimportantsocioeconomicfactorsaffectingthedemandandutilizationof dentalservicesamonghouseholdsinKhorramabad,Iran. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed among 500 households in Khorramabad city in 2017. The participants were selected using a randomized stratified sampling method. Logistic regression was used to determine the most important factors affectingtheutilizationofdentalservicesandlinearregressiontoexamineincomeelasticity.Tomeasureinequalityamongincome groups,theconcentrationindexwasemployed. DataanalysiswasperformedusingSTATA-14softwareandtheinequalitymeasurementwascarriedoutusingDASP-2.3inSTATAsoftware. Results: Themeannumberof visitsbytherespondentswas2.78±1.8. Incomeelasticityandconcentrationindexfortheseservices wereestimatedtobe0.31and0.207,respectively.Increasinghouseholdincome,advancingage,highereducationleveloftheheadof thehousehold,andhavingcomplementaryinsurancecoverage(OR=1.72)hadpositiverelationshipswiththeincreasedutilization of dentalservices.Also,afemaleheadof thehousehold(OR=0.39)andincreasedhouseholdsize(OR=0.9)ledtoareductioninthe utilizationof theseservices. Conclusions: Inequalityisobservedintheuseof dentalservicesbetweendifferentsocioeconomicgroups. Therefore,healthpolicymakersshouldimplementinterventionssuchasdentalhealthinsurancetoreducethisinequalityinsuchawaythatinequalities betweensocioeconomicgroupsarereduced.
