Probiotics are live non-pathogenic microorganisms and are mostly found living symbiotically in the human gut microbiota. They have currently been successfully administered to patients undergoing several forms of surgeries though few successfully data exist on their pediatric clinical application. Congenital heart disease (CHD) has been reported to be one of the most significant causes of morbidity and mortality as well as consistent risk factors for necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in term infants. About one third of in term and premature neonates with NEC also had CHD hence further compounding NEC associated fatality. This article seeks to review and evaluate the effect of probiotics on congenital heart diseases and NEC prevention in preterm infant.
